Everything happens on your device
CheckLink reads the links, the text and the pictures you give it on your own device, and makes the clean link there. Nothing you check is sent anywhere, to us or to anyone else, and nothing is logged. There is no server that receives it. CheckLink never opens the link it checks: it only reads it.
The page carries a security policy that lets it load only its own files, and blocks every connection its code could open and every form submission. The Android app, which runs this page inside it, has no internet access at all, so it cannot send anything anywhere. It also tells Android's built-in web view, which shows the page, not to send usage statistics to Google, and switches off its Safe Browsing lookups.
The camera
The Android app asks for one permission, the camera, and uses it only for Scan with camera. Android asks you for it when you press Scan with camera, never when the app starts, and everything else works without it: pasting, choosing a picture and sharing into the app.
While the camera is on, a few frames a second are read on your device to find a code, and then dropped. Nothing is recorded, stored or sent. The camera turns off as soon as a code is found, when you press Stop camera, when you leave the page or the app, and after two minutes without a code. While it is on, the app keeps the screen out of screenshots and out of the recent-apps view.
Pictures
A picture you choose, or share into the app from another app, is read on your device to find the codes in it. CheckLink reads it from where it is and keeps no copy of it, and it is not sent anywhere.
Make a QR code draws a QR code of the clean link on your device. Save picture opens Android's save screen, where you choose where it goes; the app's own copy is deleted as soon as it is written. Share picture hands it to the app you choose; the app keeps that picture in its own private storage until CheckLink next starts afresh, so that the other app has time to read it.
Copy, Share and Go to
Copy puts the clean link on your device's clipboard, and Share hands it to the app you choose through Android's share sheet. Either way it goes straight from your device to where you put it, and nothing passes through us. Once you have pasted or shared it, it is in the hands of that app and the people you send it to.
A secret in a QR code, such as a Wi-Fi password or a recovery phrase, stays hidden until you press Show, and copying a two-factor seed or a recovery phrase asks first. A secret, or a link that carries a sign-in value or personal details, is marked as sensitive when you copy it, so Android 13 and later hide it in the clipboard preview. While such a link or a secret is on screen, the app also asks Android to keep the screen out of screenshots and out of the recent-apps view.
Go to opens the clean link in your own browser, and only when you press it. From then on, that site and your browser handle it under their own terms.
What is kept on your device
CheckLink keeps no history. The links, texts and pictures you check stay in the page only while it is open, until you press Clear or close the app.
One thing is stored: when you close the first-run notice, the app stores the date and time in its local storage, so that the notice does not show again. It never leaves your device, and we cannot see it. Uninstalling the app, or clearing its storage in Android's settings, removes it. The app keeps all its data out of Android's backups.
Reporting a link CheckLink broke
Under the clean link, Did CheckLink break your link? Email us opens your own email app with a message to info@stormberry.as, filled in with the original link and the clean one, which you can change before sending. CheckLink sends nothing itself: the message reaches us only if you send it. A link that carries a sign-in value or personal details is left out of the message. If you send it, our company privacy policy explains what happens to it.
Where you got the app
Zapstore. Zapstore finds the app through our signed listing on Nostr, an open network of relays, downloads the file from the releases page of CheckLink's repository on GitHub and checks it against our signed listing. GitHub sees that download as it sees any other, under its own privacy statement, and counts how often each file is downloaded; that count is all we can see. Zapstore and the relays it uses work under their own terms. We receive nothing else.
Your rights
Because we receive nothing from your use of CheckLink, we hold no data about you from it to give you, correct or delete. If you write to us, our company privacy policy explains what happens to your message, and your rights under the GDPR and the Norwegian Personal Data Act (personopplysningsloven). You can also complain to the Norwegian Data Protection Authority (Datatilsynet, datatilsynet.no). Questions about this page: info@stormberry.as
Changes to this page
If anything here changes, we update this page and the date below. The Android app carries the copy that was current when that version was built; the latest, with every change to it, is in CheckLink's repository on GitHub: the history of this page.
